Movement and physiotherapy after 70: how we prevent falls
A fall can change an older person's life. Apart from a fracture or injury, it often brings fear and a loss of confidence. The person begins to move less, and inactivity makes them even more vulnerable. The good news is that the risk can be reduced.
Why the risk rises
According to the World Health Organization, the risk grows when balance, strength, vision or mobility decline. Medicines and conditions that cause dizziness or a drop in blood pressure also play a part, as do dangerous stairs, poor lighting and unsafe floors.
Exercise makes the difference
The WHO reports that individualized programs working on balance and strength reduced falls by about 23% in clinical studies. Good programs start from each person's level, become gradually more demanding and continue steadily, not just for a few weeks. Tai chi is another option. Before starting an exercise program, it is a good idea to talk to a doctor or physiotherapist.
The role of physiotherapy
The physiotherapist assesses how the older person walks, where strengthening is needed and which aid suits them, such as a stick or a walking frame. After a fracture, stroke or operation, rehabilitation helps them regain confidence and not give up moving.
Other measures that help
- Ask the doctor to review the medicines, especially if they cause dizziness.
- Have eyesight checked regularly.
- Choose stable shoes that do not slip.
- Get up slowly from the bed or chair, especially if you feel dizzy.
- At home, make sure there is good lighting and grab rails in the bathroom, and clear rugs and cables out of the way.
- In winter, with snow and ice, avoid going out unaccompanied.
If a fall happens
If there is severe pain, a blow to the head or the person cannot get up, call for medical help at once. Even when no injury is visible, talk to the doctor, because a fall may point to a health problem that needs checking. Do not let fear keep them still. With guidance, a gradual return to movement helps them regain strength and confidence.
